Best mascara

The best mascara should be free of mercury (a popular preservative today), methylparaben, aluminum powder, and benzene alcohol. I have never seen such a mascara… But you can make your own mascara based on activated carbon or cocoa pigments. Personally, I haven’t tried making it yet, I’m waiting for aloe vera gel, but I’ve already read all the reviews I found online about homemade organic mascara using all possible recipes. I’ll start with a few of the most successful recipes and add a couple of conclusions from myself based on reviews.

Natural mascara with Shea butter

Ingredients:

  • 1 heaping teaspoon of unrefined Shea butter
  • 1.5 teaspoons beeswax (finely grated)
  • 3 teaspoons of aloe vera gel (if you have a bush, cut off a leaf and scrape off fresh gel, without preservatives or fragrances)
  • 2 tablets of activated carbon (or capsules), or cocoa in the amount that will give you the desired shade and consistency
  • syringe
  • tube with brush

best mascara

How to cook:

  1. Prepare a container for mascara in advance - this can be a tube from your finished mascara, thoroughly washed and dried. You can use miniature aluminum jars for unrefined oils or Vaseline - anything hermetically sealed and with a small volume will do.
  2. Place everything except coal in a small container (for example, a glass or multi-cup from a multicooker) and place in hot water in a water bath until completely dissolved.
  3. Grind the activated carbon in a mortar and add to the mixture, stir thoroughly.
  4. Take a syringe without a needle and draw warm mascara into it and squeeze it into a tube (the container you have chosen for homemade mascara).

The author of the recipe, a wonderful girl from the USA Emmy, writes that you should not compare this mascara with a store-bought one. Mascaras wear differently and homemade mascara may take some getting used to. Emmy says that the mascara does not flake off or run, but thanks to the pure organics in the composition, it can quickly deteriorate (3-4 months).

A small note from me. I do not recommend using coconut oil, as it instantly melts from body heat. But maybe increasing the amount of wax and decreasing the oil might work. And Shea butter is more refractory. Also, I’m not sure that aloe can be replaced with something - it’s the aloe gel that allows the mascara to dry faster and stick to the eyelashes. There was a question in the comments - can I try gelatin? I wouldn’t risk it. To remove the gelatin, you’ll have to give your eyes a hot shower every day, and removing mascara can be quite an aggressive process. In the comments to the recipe there was a recommendation to simply tint the aloe gel with charcoal, cocoa or mineral shadows and this simple mixture will work perfectly without wax and oil. In several girls, the gel in the overall mass peeled off, but most likely this was due to insufficient mixing of the ingredients. Homemade mascara takes longer to dry, and this is its disadvantage.

Homemade mascara recipe with black clay

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablets of activated carbon
  • 1/3 tsp cosmetic clay
  • 5 drops of glycerin
  • 1/2 tsp aloe vera gel

How to cook:

  1. Mix everything in a small container, after grinding the coal into a “fine” dust.
  2. If necessary, you can add a little more aloe gel.
  3. Using a syringe, pour the mascara into the container.
  4. This mascara comes off very well with olive oil.

This version of the mascara recipe can also be enriched with cocoa, and note that it does not contain fatty components, which may be more suitable for oily skin and in the warm season. There is a recommendation to add a pinch of corn starch - it lengthens the eyelashes and makes the consistency of the mascara more creamy. One of the girls who tried this option indicated that after a week the mascara was infused and lay on the eyelashes much better than immediately after preparation.

natural mascara

The author of the recipe, a girl from Australia Erin, assures that the mascara dries quickly, does not crumble and does not float. You may be wary of using soap in a recipe, but organic-based soap does not contain alkali or a host of other substances that irritate the mucous membranes, so you should not be afraid to use it. Good soap is made with olive oil. The most enthusiastic reviews are for this version of homemade mascara.

The best part is, Erin only makes homemade mascara because the plastic containers for commercial mascara are not recycled, and she makes every effort to be plastic-free in her life. I admire such people!
