Do-it-yourself rug made from jeans (MK video)
I want to share a simple way to weave a rug from jeans. Looking at the rug, you wouldn’t immediately realize that this is a recycling of old things. I’ll try in my own way to inspire you to create much more successful mattings and rugs, but for the first time I’m happy!
Rug made of jeans
Depending on the scale of the project, we will need several pairs of jeans. My rug 80 cm X 60 cm took 4 pairs, the length of the legs fit my needs just right.
Materials:
- Several pairs of jeans
- Furniture stapler
- Strong yarn or ribbon
- Beam or thick cardboard (any base that comes to mind and seems good)
- Needle and sewing thread
- 6-7 hours of free time and a good series or audiobook (I was inspired by Richard Dawkins)
- Cut off the legs of the jeans and rip them along the inside seam. If the size of the trousers allows you not to save fabric, then you can simply cut off the seam.
- Cut off the hem seam (I don’t know exactly what it’s called).
- Cut the jeans into equal strips (mine are about 3.5 cm wide). Super precision is not necessary here.
- We sew each strip of fabric - we make a hollow “pipe”.
- Iron each strip so that the seam lies in the middle of the “pipe”.
- I had a pine beam, so I stuffed fabric onto it, but cardboard might also work. We lay the strips of fabric on the base, to which we temporarily attach them.
- Nail the fabric to the beam with a slight overlap. If you have cardboard, then cut it and insert strips into the grooves, experiment with the distance between the grooves.
- We do the same with the other end of the fabric. I didn’t notice the need for a frame - the weaving does not tighten, everything is done easily.
- First we tie the top and bottom to hold the strips together. How I tied it, see the video below. I stitched between the rows with a needle for safety.
- We braid the strips in any way. I imitated a thin plain weave (more details in the video).
- Remove the staples, shake them thoroughly and use them! In this video I showed how I tied and intertwined the strips.
My rug was woven for the bathroom. Pairs well with graphite floors and white brick walls.
